This page describes some aspects of the configuration used in real life by by Jon, the original developer of Plucky.
For more real-life examples, see also family, homeschoolers.
import classic
Jon is not a wimp. He imports the classic configuration, as it is the way Plucky was originally intended to be used. As strange as this may sound, he actually prefers to not see images on much of the web.
low delay, most of the time
At this point in his life, Jon does not need a large delay to maintain self-control. He uses a zero delay the majority of the time. This is particularly helpful when users ask him to reproduce problems on some website, and Jon needs to alter his configuration to investigate the problem.
YouTube is a time suck
Jon has found YouTube to be a time suck. He uses the classic setup, so YouTube has no videos by default, but he can allow individual videos at will. He uses a delay pattern to specify a 1 hour delay to discourage spending time on YouTube videos that he does not plan ahead to watch.
pluck + delay 1h "+ youtube"
Jon has on occassion spent a couple hours watching YouTube videos in the evenings when he’s tired, and he has regretted spending his time this way when he later crawled into bed to sleep, aware what he really needed was sleep rather than mindless consumption at the information pipe. He uses the following rules to prevent himself from simply doing pluck + now+20m allow everything repeatedly, as he had begun to develop a habit of in evenings on which he was tired. Could he concoct another rule to work around this? He could, but his temptation is not so strong that he would actually even think about creating such rules. He isn’t sorely tempted to watch YouTube; it is only out of laziness that he has done so.
pluck + delay 1h "+ when 18-24 allow everything"
pluck + delay 1h "+ when 18-24 unblock everything"
pluck + delay 1h "+ action:allow+"
email is a time suck
Jon prevents himself from using of email Mondays 8am to 12pm; Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays from 6am to 3pm; and Fridays 6am to 12pm because he finds himself tempted to turn to email instead of sticking with his actual work.
pluck + allow fastmail.com
pluck + when M8-12.TWR6-15.F6-12 block fastmail.com
How did Jon found most of the rules in this configuration when writing this page
He used pluck find. For example,
pluck find fastmail
